I've been using a Plextor 716UF DVD burner with my IBM T43p notebook as I have a 2nd hard disk in place of the slow DVD-burner provided with the notebook. I dual boot Solaris (snv_42a now) from the 2nd disk using System Commander.
I've been installing Nevada using the USB/2 connection on the Plextor but it also has a Firewire connection. So I've plugged in an IBM Cardbus Firewire card into the single cardbus slot in the machine and it seems to be recognized OK. From scanpci I get: pci bus 0x000c cardnum 0x00 function 0x00: vendor 0x104c device 0x8019 Texas Instruments TSB12LV23 IEEE-1394 Controller >From prtconf -D I get the following before the drive is powered up: pci8086,2448, instance #0 (driver name: pci_pci) pci1014,56c, instance #0 (driver name: pcic) pcs, instance #0 (driver name: pcs) pci104c,100, instance #0 (driver name: hci1394) After powering the drive, I get: pci8086,2448, instance #0 (driver name: pci_pci) pci1014,56c, instance #0 (driver name: pcic) pcs, instance #0 (driver name: pcs) pci104c,100, instance #0 (driver name: hci1394) unit, instance #0 (driver name: scsa1394) disk, instance #4 (driver name: sd) So it looks to me as it is correctly recognized. If I put a Solaris 10 Update 2 DVD (burned on the Plextor using the USB/2 interface), volume management opens a window and the disk looks OK. However, if I choose the eject function, it appears not to work. If the Plextor is connected via USB/2, the eject function ejects the DVD. Should I expect the eject function to work via Firewire? Is a firewire interface fully functional in Nevada? I also have a Lacie dual interface (Firewire and USB/2) portable hard disk enclosure with a 60 GB 7200 RPM drive with Fat32 format. I purchased it as some Lacie dual and triple nterface devices are listed as Solaris Ready for both SPARC and x86 Solaris on: http://www.sun.com/io_technologies/lacie.html The disk and enclosure seems to work fine with Nevada using the USB/2 port. Should it work correctly with Firewire and Nevada? (It works fine with the Cardbus Firewire card and Windows XP and fine with my iMac using Firewire at home.)
