Which "Solaris version" firefox did you get, what's the filename?

I assume your Solaris is connected to the Internet and you have root acess,
try these steps:

1. Open a terminal, login as root

2. Download the install firefox to /usr/local:

# cd /usr/local
# /usr/sfw/bin/wget
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.5.0.4/contrib/solaris_tar_ball/firefox-1.5.0.4.en-US.solaris2.10-i386.tar.bz2
# bzip2 -dc /tmp/irefox-1.5.0.4.en-US.solaris2.10-i386.tar.bz2 | tar xvf -

4. You're done.
To run firefox as any user in a desktop
environment, just run this command: /usr/local/firefox/firefox from a
terminal:

I am sure you'll have other questions, like how to make it default, how to
creat a icon on desktop so it can launched by mouse click etc., those will
be your exercise :)

Firefox is now the default browser in Nevada, iirc.
Or you can always download the latest from here:
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/releases/
select a release, then search for "Solaris" in the next page.

Thunderbird is here:
http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/releases/
Almost the same install procedure. Again, leave for your exercise.

In the future, install common programs like those will be made much easier,
just don't know how far the future is ;-)
