[laptop-discuss] Desktop Appearance /Visual Effects

Whenever I set the Visual Effects to anything other than None I am no longer 
able to use cntrl c or cntrl d or for that matter any cntrl char commands in my 
xterm windows. Is there a way to keep my cntrl commands and use Visual Effects?
