This time it appears to get much farther.  The last
two lines are:

8042 device: mouse at 1,mouse8042 #0
mouse80420 is /pci at 0,0/isa at 1f/i8042 at 1,20/mouse01

It hangs at that point.  Maybe it's a problem with the
touchpad on this netbook.  I'll borrow a USB mouse to
see if that helps.
