Il presidente, Floyd Bloom, ha dichiarato senza peli sulla lingua che i fondi medici fino ad ora destinati alla ricerca high-tech vengano immediatamente dirottati per rafforzare il sistema sanitario di base in crisi irreversibile. Dice Bloom, in una intervista a BioMedNet, "All these years, we in the biological and medical sciences have been encouraging people to support research because of the advances in molecular understanding of disease with every expectation that we would be able to deliver those scientific advances and convert them into practicable treatments and diagnostics for people". E continuando, "But the medical system has been undergoing its own problems. Multiple Institute of Medicine reports over the last four years have called attention to the medical system in crisis from a variety of things, including malpr! actice rate increases, the loss of significant numbers of nurses from the system, the reduction in the number of hospitals that are available to take care of people, the enormous cost to employers and to employees for their health coverage benefits. "Worse, no one seems to be imbued with the desire to take on the system. It is as though it is an American secret that we don't want to pay attention to. "Yet, as scientists, we must not only be concerned as citizens, as parents, as children of aging parents, but we also have to be concerned for our efforts to be accommodated into practical events. We have to have an effective, responsive medical treatment system available to implement whatever the future discoveries will bring."<br>Chissa se le parole di M.Bloom cadranno nel dimenticatoio. In USA negli ultimi anni, solo Hillary Clinton si e' posta il problema dello sfacelo della sanita' americana.
