I ran into this when doing some tricky merges between calendar
versions and branches, too. We thought it was a problem with my
version of subversion, 1.4, which Henry also uses, but can't get it
down to a well-understood case. My google queries so far indicate
that many people have faced this and no one understands it. Never
satisfying.
