Max, pleased to hear that ..
_______________

On your first point .. "SWFObject ExpressInstall uses an actionscript stub to do player
version detection, which has to be compiled into each application"   .. a recent posting in SWFObject forum by Geoff Stearns confirms that this ExpressInstall functionality is now achieved by a second small swf movie placed in same location as compiled movie.  So I understand that there is now no need to compile this script into frame 1 in movies. Clean.

v1.4.4 is the latest stable build: http://blog.deconcept.com/swfobject/swfobject1-4.zip

v2.0 is available for beta testing: http://blog.deconcept.com/code/swfobject2.0/

_______________

On your second point .. "We have an elaborate scheme that doesn't use the ActiveX/Java bridge
for Flash/browser communication, which allow _setCanvasAttribute to work
in many more browsers, including Safari." .. I'm not the best ActiveX/Java coder .. and I don't have a Mac for testing in Safari.

I can see a way for possibly emulating _setCanvasAttribute by extracting some embed.js functions to work with SWFObject. This would ensure backwards compatibility with deployed lzapps. I could play with that experiment.

But you could also post a question at SWFObject mail list. Geoff Stearns is very helpful.
