I think of <![CDATA[ ]]> as decorative fins that give the language a classic 1950's Big American Car look, which I enjoy.

The XML look is so hip and cool, that I'll bet one of these days PHP will imitate it, and force you to put <![CDATA[ around all your PHP function bodies, even though the rest of the PHP program isn't XML. Not for any practical reason, just to rub off some of that "Web 2.0" smell on itself.
