Doh! I have temporarily turned off the in-lining of setAttribute
(since I have not yet updated the in-line version). That surely
explains _some_ of the slow-down you are seeing.
I'll work on that today, and see if I can fix up states to at least
work in JS1. We will have more work to do on states for JS2.
