Actually, I've improved the demo by adding duration="1" to the innermost
animatorgroup.

This is how an application would behave if simplelayout treated opacity="0" as
visible="false". Again, "I say thee, 'Nay!'"

<canvas height="60">
  <view >
    <simplelayout axis="x" spacing="10"/>
    <view bgcolor="red" height="30" width="50"/>
    <view name="middle" bgcolor="green"
          height="30" width="50"
          visible="true" opacity="1">
      <animatorgroup process="sequential"
          duration="500" repeat="Infinity">
         <animatorgroup attribute="opacity">
           <animator to="0" />
             <animatorgroup attribute="visible"
                duration="1">
               <animator from="0" to="0"  />
               <animator from="1" to="1"  />
             </animatorgroup>
           <animator to="1" />
         </animatorgroup>
      </animatorgroup>
    </view>
    <view bgcolor="black" height="30" width="50"/>
  </view>
</canvas>
