Hi Mike,
It's entirely possible to do this. I've implemented the beginnings of a
simple builder already. I"m happy to post the source code for you to
work with. Ultimately, it'd be sweet to have a hosted online builder tool.
This will really prove the power of LZX. It's sort of like the Java
compiler being written in Java... But visual!

Hello all,
So, I am very excited. This weekend I begin working on integrating
Laszlo and Ruby on Rails -- inspired by the excellent work Geert Bevin
has done on the Java side (Ruby hater though he is ;-) ).
This is pie-in-the-sky stuff, but would it be possible to build a
visual interface builder in Laszlo. Something like the visual form
builders in tools both great (Delphi) and horrid (Visual Basic). You
select interface widgets from a pallette, place them on the page, set
their properties, etc.? I suppose this comes down to: can you create a
Laszlo view that is completely dynamic (defined at runtime)?
We will be porting Typo, the excellent Rails blogging engine, to
Laszlo first. I want users to be able to define their own interface,
which they could do with Liquid templates (templates already used to
define UI's in Typo). But letting users do that themselves with a UI
builder would be da bomb...
