This is definitely timely...

The first non-Flash runtime OpenLaszlo will support will be DHTML (that is, browser Javascript). A significant amount of work has already been done; we will be announcing (and demoing) progress toward this effort in March. It's pretty exciting stuff and will make Laszlo truly buzzword compliant. :-)

Laszlo Sneak Peek: "Look Ma, No Flash"
David Temkin, Laszlo Systems
Track: Products & Services
Date: Wednesday, March 08
Time: 5:10pm - 5:55pm
Location: Elizabeth F
OpenLaszlo is a platform for developing interactive, media-rich applications and delivering them into any Web browser--to date using Flash as the runtime. In this session, Laszlo founder and CTO David Temkin previews OpenLaszlo 4.0, which will compile either Flash or DHTML applications--resulting in an identical user experience.

Keep in mind that OpenLaszlo has its own widgets/UI toolkit. This will remain the same under DHTML or any other runtime; if OL were made to work under (say) a Java client, it would not really use Swing or SWT; it would use lower-level Java facilities (imaging, low-level events, networking).

David Temkin always says that Flash is only a rendering engine for the Laszlo platform...the only one used these days... so how about using GTK+ for rendering lzx?

The mayor advantange on this, i think, will be that laszlo based apps may run in the desktop faster than using an stand alone flash player and may be completely LGPL.

I don`t really know if the complete lzx especification can be rendered with GTK, and also how the animations will be. But i think that the same feeling have the laszlo creator`s team when tried to use Flash.

So, what do you think??

I'd personally perfer something like WX or SWT, that uses native widgets on all platforms, but yeah - I like the idea.

Probably SWT considering laszlos Java base.
