It sounds like you're having a problem with alpha-blended transparency. Create your images with partial transparency and export your images as png's with transparency.
The tools of choice by the designers at Laszlo Systems are Adobe Photoshop to create bitmaps and Macromedia Flash to create swf's, but I imagine CorelDraw also has the features you need to export alpha- blended png's. Any reference on preparing web graphics should explain how to make png's with "good" (alpha-blended) transparency.
