I didn't want to use replication because ultimately, I need to toggle the
labels on the tabelements by changing the root datapath on the tabslider
itself. Also, I'm trying to change the label on the tabelement, not the
content.

Here is some code that will work. I changed your dataset a little bit
so it would have one root node.

  <dataset name="tablabels">
    <items>

one

two

three

    </items>
  </dataset>

  <tabslider width="100" height="100" datapath="tablabels:/items">
    <tabelement datapath="item/text()" />
  </tabslider>

I'm stuck and I'm hoping someone can help.

Given the code below, what do I put in place of ??? to display the
string from the dataset as the label on the slider?

  <dataset name="tablabels">

one

two

three

  </dataset>

  <tabslider datapath="tablabels:/">
    <tabelement text="???" selected="true"/>
    <tabelement text="???" />
    <tabelement text="???" />
  </tabslider>
