Not really a solution or anything, but I'd suggest that many modal dialogues, 
especially when just for notices, isn't good UI design. Using them trains 
people to ignore them, and then they do things like click OK on the box that 
says "Would you like to install this malicious ActiveX control that will 
steal your passwords, lose your socks and kill your cat".

Instead, how about messages in red right below/beside where the user would be 
looking. I'm a fan (in some situations) of disabling buttons while something 
is processing, and having status text immediately to the right of it.

It also saves the user a click. They don't have to close the 'no items found' 
box and then the search box, they can immediately fix the typo and hit search 
again, or close the search box, or whatever.
