gif has never been a "fine" format: it has always been under the threat of
pending, and then the actual patents (yes, plural -- different companies) on
lzw compression.

it's now even rendered obsolete by a far superior format, png.

someone has got to start somewhere with pushing png.  i'm glad to see that
latex2html does it by default.
