To make shipit independent you could copy the widgets into the shipit tree. Our leading solution was to fork launchpad; shipit runs an an ancient version and we do not care. ISD wants a django app, but it is not a priority. I do not recall arguments again maintaining a fork, but from our perspective as engineers, we took to approach of creating lp.shipit and landed what we thought would be one last painful branch for shipit. In retrospect, we should have included several other modules :(. There is nothing preventing use from changing shipit, requesting a review, and landing a branch.
