We're now running 15 instances on each of 4 machines, with 2 threads per instance, but HA proxy configured to sent one request at a time to them. The second thread is used for internal XMLRPC requests and monitoring. When we remove the internal XMLRPC service in favour of APIs then we'll truely be single-request at a time.
We had some glitches with oops reporting overnight, but even accounting for that we've seen a reduction now that this is all live.
