But previously, as I understand it, being a bug contact would cause
you to become assigned and/or subscribed ? So I'm assignee and
subscriber for a bunch of bugs that arrived while I was bug contact.

`Also notified makes it difficult to unsubscribe', yes. But that's a
separate issue.
For the avoidance of any doubt, the problems described in #48860 are
quite severe in some cases and should IMO that issue should be top
priority in this area.
