Hi all,
This might be a repost. If so, please excuse, I do feel strongly
how it frustrates people from finding themselves around in launchpad
hence putting this up.
Right now the only convenient way of seeing packages within Ubuntu is
go to https://launchpad.net/ then click on ubuntu then type in the
package name. Is a newbie to launchpad supposed to know that he needs
to click on Ubuntu & then find the package name. Mostly the newbies
would try to put the packagename or whatever info. they have in the
search (like google) .
For e.g. I am going to use 'galternatives' ( a package I
recently found & like) , now if I enter it on the front page in the
search project it gives me an error saying that the project is not
registered. It does not give me any indication what other alternatives
are there.
I do have some ideas do not know which of them are feasible,
enforceable or not. So I'm just going to run them.
1. Scratch out the search project right in the middle of the page &
instead either have Search Titles & text buttons either in the center
or at the right upper-hand corner. Having it search as titles should
give access to not only packages, projects as well as teams & people.
So everybody is happy.
2. On the results page, along with the error thrown, have some kind of
question/hint asking if its from some software & give a drop-down box
of the various projects. The search term alongwith the choice of the
project should give the correct or somewhere near results.
3. Have the search term & drop-down box as proposed before on the
main page, which would also make the person know there are multiple
choices & he can try other permutations & combinations.
Although the 1st one is my clear favorite don't really know if its
feasible at all or not. If any of this is feasible please file a
bug-report or spec. for it & please send me the link. I would like to
see where its going. Carry on the good work. Cheers!
