VISA serial communication in LV 7 application

My development environment is Labview 7.0 running under
Windows 2000.  I have a VI that communicates via VISA
serial.  The VI works fine, and information flows back
and forth over the serial line.  When I build the VI
into an application and run it on my development
system, everything appears to work fine.  There are
no errors of any type reported.  However,
no information is communicated over the serial
line.  This is really frustrating!
