Yes- it boils down to the fact I'm using Exceed on Windows rather than using
something more like a proper x-terminal. So it's not obvious which key
should logically be mapped to Meta, and Windows seems to be grabbing the
ones I try to use, such as the two "Windows" keys.

The "Use CTRL instead of Meta" option someone mentioned has got things
working comfortably.
