I agree with you that this is confusing. I went through the same "training" process many years ago and I have conformed well to LabVIEW's rules. I am used to it now. It takes people like you to bring up the bad memories and remind us of what we all went through. Thanks a lot! :-)
Whenever I create my paths I put in a conditional that decodes whether I'm in a DE (development environment) or EXE. I format my paths accordingly. You can get this information by placing down a property node of the Application Class then Select Application>Kind.
On a side note: This question has been answered many times before. Perhaps someone should add it to the LabVIEW FAQ. Any takers? <http://labviewfaq.org>
