For some it is a hobby, some use it for commercial stuff.
I'd prefer to use the word "professional" as a description of a user,
his techniques and his dedication, rather than as an indication of
whether he's doing his "day job" or spending time honing his skills or
programming "on spec".
I suspect that I'm by no means not the only user who has a very
indistinct line between "official" and "unofficial" work. At present I'm
hacking some serial comms stuff which hasn't been commissioned by a
customer but would likely be used as part of our support toolkit; much
of the business is run using Delphi code and expertise built up on this
type of project will help me port that off Windows if that looks
appropriate.
