I have to say that I don't know how to write this sort of thing, either
from the point of view of Lazarus or from the point of view of making it
acceptable to users rather than looking like intrusive spyware.
If we had a "check for updates" feature that would give much of the
desired information and most users would not see that an intrusive
spyware action. Of course such feature is not easy to implement and it
had to be really useful, like being able to upgrade "in place".
