Actually, I am often pleased when I copy/cut and past a block of text from one area to another only to find that the Editor knew what I was trying to do. I've left all the defaults the same. But I install Ubuntu often. One suggestion may be to delete your Lazarus profile information in your home directory. This will reset everything to the latest and greatest as defaults and ensure that any settings you change will actually be respected...
