AFAIR NoGui was invented for writing (Windows) services, which have to process messages, but do not provide any GUI. Dunno how such server applications work on other platforms.

No. Windows service applications (daemonapp) work without LCL and noGUI.

The reason for noGUI is to allow applications that somehow use one of the basic LCL units (graphics, with TFont and Canvas support) to compile.
