In the future one thing we can do, if the desktop environment is popular
enough (I'd argue that Ubuntu is the most popular Linux for desktop users
distribution) is:

* Make a note of the problem
* Provide links to resources where people could start if they want to work
on a fix

Regarding point #1, on this page I see nothing noting the problem, even
though it;s been in existence since Unity was made the default interface in
2011 (more than four years ago):
