Recently I ran across the statement that some? all? of the old Hewlett
Packard sRGB profiles are encumbered by a license that might or does
limit their use to certain platforms (eg Windows) and/or certain
hardware and/or other assorted other possible limitations.

It turns out that such a profile is embedded in a printer test image
that I downloaded from the internet.

The command "exiftool -S -ProfileVersion -ProfileDateTime
-ProfileCopyright file-name" outputs the following information about
this profile:

ProfileVersion: 2.1.0
ProfileDateTime: 1998:02:09 06:49:00
ProfileCopyright: Copyright (c) 1998 Hewlett-Packard Company

I checked other sRGB profiles and found several almost identical sRGB
profiles with this exact information in the profile, including the Adobe
sRGB profile, formerly (but no longer, which seems coincidentally odd)
available from the Adobe website.

Apparently there was a license that originally accompanied the problem
profile(s), that gave specific limitations on the use of the profiles.

Has anyone on this list heard of this issue?

If so, do you have a copy of the license? If so, does the license
explain what "use" actually means? Does downloading and/or opening,
modifying, saving to disk, etc constitute "use"? Can this profile be
used at all in/on/with Linux and/or open source software?

If there are such license-encumbered sRGB profiles, is there a problem
with *all* near-identical sRGB profile with the profile version of 2.1.0
and the profile date time of 1998:02:09 06:49:00? Or just certain ones
that can be identified by something other than the profile version, date
time, and copyright?

Thanks in advance,
Elle
