You can do this in 1.0.3 but you MUST use the options options=ro to do this.
 From the admin manual :
ldm add-vdsdev [options={ro,slice}] backend volume1 at service_name
ldm add-vdsdev [options={ro,slice}] backend volume2 at service_name

Otherwise you have the problem of both ldoms scribbling over the same 
disk with unpredictable results.
