No, the 'excl' option is not set by default when you do an 'ldm-add-vdsdev'
ldm add-vdsdev [options={ro,slice,excl}] .....
(I can see though how the sentence above could be read that way)

I haven't used VxVM, but AIUI you don't need to format the disk on the
service domain before exporting it to the guest. The installation on the guest
will format the disk.

Are there any messages in /var/adm/messages on the service domain ?
Did you remove the CDROM from vold's control on the service domain ?
