This made a big difference to me on cable. I don't know if it helps DSL or not: http://www.jessestay.com/articles/2006/12/15/how-to-increase-your-internet-speed/ Distance to the test server does make a difference, but you should get within at least a Megabit of your peak I believe. From Xmission's test server I actually get 15 Mb/sec when I'm supposed to only have 8.
