I could be entirely wrong...but...

Rinetd is actually a proxy; portfw/autofw are more similar to routing
protocols. Therefore, with rinetd, a client talks to rinetd and then
rinetd talks to the server; whereas with portfw/autofw, a client does
talk directly to the server, with some packet-mangling in-between.
