My version of OpenBSD 2.6 required a MacOS partition to load software,
drivers, etc. before it could boot. At one time, I played with a Mac
INIT that would allow you to boot into OpenBSD directly; of course,
that was after drivers and whatnot had loaded.

Interesting! OpenBSD is the extent of my experince with UNIX on
Mac/68k. It comes with "Booter" of which it says this:
This MacOS program is used to load the OpenBSD kernel and start the
operating system. In all cases, you will need to download this file.
I wonder if OpenBSD no longer needs MacOS to boot...............
