Were you all aware of these problems with 2.4.5?

I wouldnt do it. You should always install a test kernel seperate from
your bootable one. If something should go wrong and it doesnt boot then you
can always select your previous kernel via lilo or grub to get back into
linux.

I have been playing with the 2.4.5 kernel with the Alan Cox patches and I
can tell you that its better to stay with the 2.4.3 kernel from Mandrake
until they can get the virtual memory and swap pages fixed. Right now the
kernel uses too much swap space even when there it plenty of free memory
available. Some work has been done on it but its not yet fixed.
