For anyone who is interested, we just finished up the latest iteration of
the "gatping" utility, a small program that rapid-fire pings a /24 network
range, then list all the hosts that show up in the pinging host's arp table.
It's a quick way of determining what machines are actually connected to a
LAN at any moment.

The program is still rough, which is why it has a low version number and the
ALPHA label. It is also, by design, limited in scope -- it does just one
thing, but it does that very fast, its size is small, and it needs only
libc6. (People wanting a more general-purpose replacement for standard ping
might want to consider fping or arping instead.)
