Mhhh... syslinux and the kernel along with initrd are not accessed by the linux IDE 
drivers.... 

root.lrp IIRC is loaded by the running kernel, you probably placed the drivers in 
/boot/lib/modules. Did you try with a different microdrive and/or CF? It could also be 
the current drain of the microdrive itself.
