Most likely by trying it without a patch first. Things ended up breaking 
during the compile, and while fiddling with things, I figured out that 
things worked with that change - I suspect that my build host had an 
older version of openssh/openssl (due to the fact I was using RHEL back 
then), which caused the utterly broken configure script (broken when 
trying to cross-compile) to bail out. The configure script might be in 
much better shape by now, but from what I remember, it didn't work at 
all out of the box, when the build host wasn't exactly the same as the 
desired target host.

Sorry - I do not remember what exactly went wrong (and what I did to 
solve the problems) almost 7 years ago...
