"Resource-hungry" defined as CPU intensive?
And -Os as default?

We set it in make/MasterInclude.mk
export CFLAGS=-O2 $(ARCH_CFLAGS) -I$(BT_STAGING_DIR)/usr/include 
is that correct?

We should test it; the increase of size is way too much.
