For the major part no, AFAIK it's a "git feature" that we use.

Because that's how it's build by our toolchain. I want to keep the man-powered 
release work as low as possible for the time being and put as much of the 
logic into the program (update script)

Yes; if it doesn't work that way, the last resort could be to search for a 
host with shell and ftp access...
