Question!
How do you boot off a smart media device - since the kernel is not yet
present and no modules extensions are available.  It seems to me that the
BIOS of the computer would have to support this device in order to boot.
The page you pointed to says you are not allowed to write to the device with
something like lilo - and presumably syslinux.

I am sure you could boot off a standard 1.44 floppy and then change and
mount the new media.
