There are several possible "step 1" entries in the document you cite, none
of which describes what you are asking about here. Do you perhaps mean this
step in the instructions:
"2) Test the basic connection by typing the following on your LRP console
echo "Hello World" > /dev/ttyS0"
In the rest of my response, I'll assume that this is what you are referring
to. I'm also assuming that when you type the echo command, nothing happens
at the console (that is, you just go back to the command prompt). If you do
get some error message back, you really need to tell us what it is, so we're
not guessing blindly.

Good for starters. Here are the rest of the things you need to check (at
least the ones I can think of):
1. Are you connected to the right serial port on the LEAF device? Do you do
any better with
echo "Hello World" > /dev/ttyS1 ?
2. Is the cable OK? To connect two PCs directly, you need a null-modem cable
(Charles' instructions mention this).
3. After you try the echo commands, do the IRQs show up as active in
/proc/interrupts (they won't show there until you try to use them)?
4. Is there anything in the LEAF system's hardware that might interfere with
use of the serial port? For example, does it contain a modem that uses the
same IRQ (this will interfere with the serial port EVEN IF you are not using
the modem)?
5. If the serial ports on the mobo are 10-pin in-line connectors, do you
have the connectors on the right way? If the connector didn't come with the
mobo, is it wired correctly (there are two incompabible standards for
serial-port pinouts on mobos that use these in-line connectors)?
6. I don't recall if this version of LEAF includes the command "setserial".
If it does ... what response do you get to the command "setserial
/dev/ttyS0"? To "setserial /dev/ttyS1"? In particular, does the response
list a UART type? (If it does, that means the kernel is finding the actual
serial port. If it doesn't, it is not.) If you can't run this command ...
during the boot/init process, what do the messages say about serial ports?
7. Is everything working correctly on the other system? (Since your use of
HyperTerm on it indicates that it is a Windows system, detailed
troubleshooting of it isn't really a topic for a Linux list.)
