Well ... it's doable in principle. I did it way back in 1994, with Slackware
and kernel 1.something, running 8 external modems on a 486-40 with 16 megs
of RAM and a 16-port serial card (I forget the brand and model now),
supporting both shell and ppp connections.
I'm not at all up to date on this, but if specific questions come up, I'll
be glad to tell you what I can remember.
