Use the -e option with echo, and the \r (carriage return) escape character: echo -e "mycommand\r" I still STRONGLY suggest you look at the mail script in /lib/POSIXness/POSIXness.mail, available on LRP 2.9.8, any of my Dachstein images, or the LEAF sourceforge CVS archive. I spent a couple weeks pounding out a working mail command written in shell-script...it's harder than you might think.
