Not exactly...if you have a dynamic IP and are running dhclient, the settings for your external interface are simply ignored. > > Also, I notice ``+'' used several places for broadcast address. > > What is this? A shortcut for the 'all ones' broadcast address. The iproute2 (aka 'ip') command calculates the broadcast IP based on your IP and netmask length. Lots of folks were having trouble calculating the proper broadcast IP (it's not usually provided by the ISP), so this just makes configuration easier.
