Yes. it is odd. It makes me think that there is an error at the filesystem level, not a real overabundance of logins. I don't know what that error might be, and I'm not sure even what questions to ask. I suppose I would check how big this file is immediately after a reboot and try to observe how it changes over time, to try to get at least a preliminary sense of at least the time profile of the problem. I don't really know beyond that -- "only a firewall" isn't as descriptive as you make it sound (does it do DNS forwarding? does it accept telnet connections?
