Looks like this did it.  My inittab had both tty1 & 2
uncommented under the getty invocation section.  I
commented them out around 10 hours ago, and so far my
wtmp file is a respectable size.  I'll keep my eye on
it for the next few days.  Thanks again.

 However, try the
following:
