Xntpd checks the time at unfixed intervals. It's dependant on your system and how much it gets out of synch and on many other factors. I am fairly certain that people just fire it up and forget about it. As you system runs for longer and longer, the small adjtime adjustments begin to synch the clock with the correct time, and xntpd may not need to get the time for weeks. I have a syslog where I saw just that on a Unix box left unattended for two months.
