Come to think about it, on my first LFS system I did that. I switched terminals and compiled rpm 4.x ..... what a waste of a program .... it was a nightmare having to compile db1 and db3 (which backported to db2) and update a totally empty set of databases to compile a program that only had rpm's available with the non-release glibc that I wasn't running. The keys generated fine while I was compiling, but I soon ditched rpm to go back to apt (which is _much_ nicer).
