thanks for a quick reply. I am running with the patched pppd, but it seems 
that pppd is never started ( no output from either pptpd or pppd).

Here is the tcpdump when the client tries to connect ( machine 254 is the
Bering box).

This is really the only output, pptpd writes into system log when it starts, 
and no more ouput is produced. 
I've loaded the kernel modules and neither pptpd or pppd complains about 
anything missing. I've tried many different configurations in pptpd.conf and 
options files without any difference, so I  don't see much point in attaching 
those files. To me it looks like something is wrong that can't be fixed only 
in configuration files.
